Hey everyone. I have just started to play outcast again, and though it would be a cool idea if we can get some people together and start porting this to the unreal2 engine. It has a nice scripting language that allows us to do anything, and the world editor is great. Outdoor terrains are not a problem anymore for todays hardware. However, I need someone to do the following:

Extract the heighmaps from the outcast .PAK files.
extract the polygonal models and textures used.

That would be all.
Sound will come later.
scripting will come later.
Porting over the maps will be the relatively easy, and im Willing to commit time to this endeavour. Some coordinated work can accomplish a lot. The heightmaps are a must though.

WE NEED SOMEONE THAT WILL EXTRACT THE MODELS/TEXTURES/HEIGHTMAPS, and convert them into a workable format. Anything that opens in photoshop will do. I already have sufficient knowledge of the unreal editor to put this to good use.

Hope I can get some response and support.
This game does not deserve to die like this.

[cheer] Sweet! Someone with the same idea as me. Just today, I was going to post about this. Except my idea is a little bit different. I'm planning on buying
Maya 5.0 and using it to create a mod for UT:2003. Maya is compatible with it and is user friendly. I plan on starting small of course. Make new weapons (Hawk-Mk8, UZA-SH1), then maybe making a Cutter skin. After that, new maps with opponents featuring Talan skins. Of course this will take a while. But I like your idea. I didn't know you could port it to that engine. What will be different? Will the graphics be improved? Oh, by the way, I think we should all do this as a community. eg. Someone helps make textures, someone makes sounds... I think we can do it. [loll] We've just got to applie ourselves instead of waiting for Outcast II. [cheer]

Ok, I have been doing some research today into the feasability. I think its best if the unreal tournament 2003 engine is used as it has the new terrain engine. Unreal 2 lacks this feature sadly. I will try and contact OCripper to see if he can help to maybe to extract and convert the heightmaps into a suitable format. And if there would be some way of importing the 3d models into 3dsmax or maya, that would save us a lot of work/time. For the moment, I have started building some meshes for the objects found in outcast. The most work will go into the scripting part. I basically need a tree diagram/flowchart with every conversation in outcast and their actions. This will be a lot of work but its needed to structure the game. I'll show of some screenies in the not so far away future.

p.s. if anyone can help with this, please contact me

cool stuff!
i am currently working on a mod for ut2003 with some friends and some other problems keep me busy, otherwise i would have joined you at once. i was playing with the same idea(outcast mod) lately, but i thought about HL2 engine(whenever hl2 comes out [;)] ).
anyway i wish you a lot of luck . definitely gonna keep an eye on the progress.
it would be interesting whether its really possible to directly port the levels...
again - good luck :)
best
