Hi,

I can't apply the patch 3 (I know it has to be run before the installation) to my DVD version, I tried it on XP and 98SE.

Could it be that there is a DVD Version which is already patched?

I want to install the patch, because I'm having a problem with the music (seems to be on fast forward).
Also the intro movie won't play, but that could be because it's on the DVD part in HQ.

I hope there's someone out there who can help...

Thanks for the reply anyway, it assures me that somebody's still out there...

You will be pissed if I tell you how I got my DVD-Version: I bought it on ebay (Germany), it was new (still sealed) and the price was 1 EUR (~1 US-$) plus 1 EUR shipping. I think it was sheer luck, and nobody else seemed to have noticed the auction...

Anyway, I never really played Outcast before, still I don't want to play it without the patch, but the damn patches (I tried everything I could find on the net, I even tried XP and 98SE) won't install. I really hope the version I have is already patched.

Is there no way to contact one of the developers? I know appeal's out of business (a pity - even if I haven't played Outcast yet, I appreciate small developer teams with innovative ideas and skills (outcast still looks pretty cool), and the screens for Outcast 2 are amazing), but maybe someone has an email address or something like that.

Btw, as Appeal are/were from belgium, I guess the original version is french. I tried the french, german and english versions, but the one I thought was the best in terms of dubbing (spoken language) was the english one. But I could only judge from the intro movie and the first conversation. In general, I prefer to play it in the original language, but the french speaker for Cutter Slade was bad.. I mean really bad.
Has anyone tried different versions yet? Which one did you like better and why?

Thx

One last thing: If you're looking for a game experience which is a little bit like Outcast, try my favourite game, "Gothic". It has a huge, credible world with a lot of NPCs who seem to have their proper life. Somebody in the forums of www.worldofgothic.de told me his favourite game is outcast, and that Gothic reminded him of Outcast.
But start with Gothic I, not Gothic II because the atmosphere is quite better (also, you need a cpu > 2GHz to enjoy Gothic II).

[Edit]
PS: On german ebay, I think I found one other DVD-version. In the title it's delared as PC CD-ROM, but the description is definitely for the DVD. I already asked the seller, I keep you updated!
See for yourself:

[Edit2]
Sorry about the fuss, it's no DVD! I don't know why the seller posted a description for the DVD...

[cheer] Thanks for checking on Ebay anyway. I've been looking at Gothic. It does look pretty cool. By the way, what do you want from the patch? I play the unpatched version and I think it's fine. [y]

I read about several bugs which force you to load an old savegame, and several other annoying bugs. For example, I have to lower my audio hardware acceleration to get the music to work properly, butthen I'm unable to play with 3D Audio. The third Patch is 12 MB big, they must have fixed quite a thing.
I just want the best possible outcast experience [:)] .

I think I'm gonna wait a few days if somebody knows the answer, and then perhaps start without the patches.

I'm gonna keep my eyes open for the DVD...

And for Gothic I: Don't be discouraged by it's controls, they're quite different from what you get in other games. But it really doesn't take long to adapt.
And in the beginning, you're character/avatar ist way too weak to engange enemies in combat, esp. more than one at the same time. There are some "training" monsters which have the attribute "young" in front of their name.

@Jub Jub
This Time it's definitely the DVD:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws....y=21932

One drawback: the seller will only ship to Europe. But perhaps you can talk him into shipping to the US...

@Topic
Is nobody out there who knows the answer? Are Erkki and Jub Jub the last survivors in this barren forum? [:)]
Even if you don't if there was a DVD Version which was already patched, write something, just to show me, that someone's out there... [nooo]

Or perhaps you know some special trick how to apply the Patch to the DVD.
On www.adelpha.de, there was a install guide but it doesn't work and can't be right, because says you have to apply the pactch after you installed the game.
But if I run the patch before the installation, it prompts me to put in CD1, which I don't have, and if I insert the DVD, I get the message "application failed to launch" (or so) but the setup seems to continue, and the install seems to be finished. Now, if I run the created shortcut, it cannot find "outcast.exe" (which is never on the hard drive, even if install only the dvd and not the patch), and running laucher.exe does nothing at all.

[cheer] Thanks for finding a copy [cheer] I'll try to email him, but I'm not sure wether or not you need a German Ebay account. All I have is an American one. [nooo]

Your ebay account works worldwide. You just have to log in on the german page. As the seller will ship to europe, the item will also appear on the UK site, so you don't need to bother with the german language. All you have to do is to select "Any Country" instead of "United Kingdom" in the search mask.

btw, if the seller won't ship to the US, I could perhaps buy it for you, if you want...
otherwise, I'm sure that the DVD will be sold from time to time again, and one day somebody will ship to the US.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll just wait and search for someone who does ship to the US. [8D]

MK, the DVD version is fully patched [;)]
You still have a sound problem with XP though (put hardware acceleration to minimum if it happens)

The French dubber for Cutter is the guy who dubbs Bruce Willis for the French versions of his movies. I think actually he is quite good and that was a selling point in France.
I played both Gothic and Gothic 2 and I agree with you. Great games with a huge freedom.

Welcome on the forum. [lut]

Thanks a lot for the answer! Now nothing can stop me from playing the game... [rollin]

Unfortunately, I have the music problem even with Win98SE, I think it's my Audigy. [:(]
Or perhaps it's even a general problem with newer creative cards...?
The music/score seems to be pretty good, so I guess it's better to go without 3D Audio than without music.

What a coincidence, the german version is also spoken by the guy who dubbs Bruce Willis in german. Why isn't the english version spoken by Bruce Willis itself? [:D]

But I really didn't like the french intro, and in the german version, he really didn't get the first conversation, esp. the part with "... holy shit". Both versions seemed so "unnatural" to me, but perhaps I'm spoiled by playing most games in english...

In general, even most high budget games suck in dubbing (Warcraft III etc.).

Thanks a lot again! [cheer]

What's the advantage of the DVD version? Is it just a disk swapping issue, or are there other advantages as well? Is there a difference in the graphicS?

Thanks,

There are not that much advantages; the game itself seems to be untouched.

- You can choose from several languages
- The intro is rendered in DVD-like quality
- you have the outtakes, making of etc.
- soundtrack, wallpapers etc.

Does the CDROM version require disk swapping, whereas the DVD does not? As you can tell, I haven't installed Outcast yet. I have an unopened copy.

More importantly the games graphics are the same in either version, and they run as smoothly?

Thanks,

I only have the DVD, but I'm sure, that they didn't enhance the game and the graphics are exactly the same and as smooth as in the CD version.

I don't know about the disk swapping, but as outcast had only two CDs, I think it might be that you need to change the disk for installation. And even if you have to change the CD in the game, it can't be very often...

If you have 3 CDs, the third CD contains afaik only the patches and some bonus stuff which is also found (in higher quality) on the DVD.

If you're a fan, or, like me, want to choose from several languages, then the DVD is the right thing, in every other case the CD is more than sufficent (I guess).

But perhaps somebody who actually owns the CD could tell us his opinion.
