Outcast Source, Outcast Binary.

Postby Adelpha » 7 May 2005, 13:02

Hello :) Ive been coming to this site since...well since the year 2001 I think.

I just registered today as ive been seeing more and more that these forums are dying...but before it eventually goes down I just wanted to show my support :)

Now to my question...

Ive emailed Yves about releasing a binary for Outcast (can be compiled under different OS'S) yet ive gotten no reply.... I was wondering if it was possible to "reverse engineer" the outcast binary to make a binary that can be compiled under different OS'S.

Personally I run Linux and I actually managed to run Outcast under Wine (after a day of hassle...let me assure you) but it runs at 1 FPS...
And thats not good when the rig is a 3 GHZ...

So...Is it possible?

Outcast will live forever if thats possible...

Well i don't have any experience in computer coding (or almost... [hu] ) , but i'm sure you can't "uncompile" an .exe file. As you said you need the source code to compile it in a new form.

I can tell you almost 99,9% that Yves can't help you. He even might never reply to that.
I used to ask him about some Outcast stuff years ago and he hasn't got anything left. The only persons you may talk to are Franck Sauer and Yann Roberts...

I'm in contact with Yves since 2002 and he only repliey rarely, so don't take this personal [respect]

Thank you for replying :) I just wish somebody could make a loader for other OS's...Because Games running native on other OS'S is rare and if it was possible with such a big game as outcast..the game would be immortal and would revive this site again!

No idea about how to make a binary, but Oucast seems to run pretty well under CEDEGA : but you'll need the DVD version of the game to run it ... I tried the 2 CD version, it doesn't male it [:/]

(thx Geo by the way)

Again, we (I, me) cannot tell you moreabout a binary : it would be great, but if the former Outcast developpers don't even reply about that, what can we do ???

Hey Hey

Postby Adelpha » 11 May 2005, 15:34

I managed to run it under Cedega (The CD Version of the game!) but i could never manage to get it to run fullscreen! Just in a window...So I had to change my desktop resolution (CTRL - + and CTRL - -) down to 640 x 480 to get some sort of...well...Dont know the word for it but you know what I mean... :)

Do you need any help getting it to run under Cedega? what is your problem?

Sorry for my bad english...Im Norwegian :)

Hi,

We don't posses the Outcast sources anymore; we left them at Appeal when we
quit this company.

Cordially,

Hello!

I was wondering (and alot of other die hard fans) if it were possible to
release the source code for Outcast under GPL.

Ive managed to run Outcast under WineX (Windows API ontop of Linux) but it
runs at about 1 FPS a second...

If you do not wish to release the source code for it ...Could you then
please just make a Binary for linux? (ID Software has done this with almost
all their games...+ alot of other game companies have)

Thank you for taking your time reading this email.

Greetings from Norway.

Mikael Patrick Xavier Le Brisze Skaar.

Hey, thanks for investigating ... [up]
Too bad Infogrames will never do anything interesting with the license or the code [:/]

(for Cedega, I don't remember the prblem verry well, it's related to the insertion of the CD I think ... If you have a "run through" explanation, we are many to be interested)

Well you are able to mount cd's ontop of eachother

lets say if you made it into an ISO

#mount it.
sudo mount -o loop -t iso9660 1.iso /mnt/cdrom
#Access it
cd /mnt/rom
#Start it
cedega Outcast.exe
#When the Setup asks you for cd #2 open up a new tab in the terminal and mount the other iso ontop of it
sudo mount -o loop -t iso9660 2.iso /mnt/cdrom
#When thats all done remember to umount the ISO's
sudo umount /mnt/cdrom
#Putting the original CD-Rom back in should work now :)

I really wish the site would become more alive...sigh

to the OC sourcecode thing: I don't believe ex-Appeal employees are allowed to release any sourcecode

But anyway ... we started oOC because of this reason [respect]

I know currently there are not much news on the page but we're moving on ... well at least for christmas there will be more behind the scenes and really nice screens (some trailer?) [sm2]
